Emily called earlier today to tell us that she has arrived safe and sound in Edmonton. She’s checked into a motel for the evening, and tomorrow she will start her search for Edmonton rentals for her new home. I have to say that I’m not sure if Emily is brave or stupid; going up there all by herself without knowing anybody there to help get settled in.

Thankfully she has a job lined up, so she won’t have to waste any time or energy looking for a job. Emily has always been an independent, adventurous girl, and moving up north without knowing anyone is an adventure that I’m sure she will tell her grandchildren some day.

The thing that concerns me about Emily going up there by herself is that I can’t help but to feel that young women are a little bit on the vulnerable side. That may sound old-fashioned to you, but that is how I feel. I hope that she makes friends quickly and that they steer her in the right direction as far as what neighborhoods would be wise to avoid and where the best shopping bargains are to be found.

The local Harley shop was having a big open house celebration this past weekend, so I decided to go to the event and check it out. There was a live broadcast being done by a local radio station, lots of free food and sodas, and they were having discounts on just about everything in the store. I ended up buying a new detachable windshield for my Harley. I was impressed with how easily it can be installed and removed. I installed it right there at the shop – they let me borrow the tools to do it. It was funny because all I needed was an allen wrench! Anyway, when I drove home I noticed that with the new windshield on the bike, I wasn’t feeling the wind hitting me, so I was driving faster than I thought! It will take a while to adjust to that!

When I was in the public school system the students were given a choice of two different foreign languages to study as a prerequisite to attending college. One was French and the other was Spanish. Once in college students were given the opportunity to study other languages. The college I went to did not have a wide variety of foreign languages to study. If I recall correctly the other courses offered were German and Russian.

I think it’s wonderful that college students are now given the option to take many different languages as a course of study. I’ve always had an interest in the history and culture of China and it would be like a dream come true if I had the opportunity to work as a translator in China at one of the translation company/companies in China.

With the economic and political growth of China, I expect that there will be an increased demand for translation services in China as more foreign countries decide to expand their businesses in China.

My sister went and served in Iraq, fighting for the “great cause.” She had a flag flown for our deceased father.

Anyway, she sent the flag back to me, with a note and a certificate telling about how a fighter helicopter had flown several missions with this flag and what it represented and that she knew I would cherish it. I wanted to hang it outside on the front of the house, but decided that I would put it on the mantel in a display case instead. I’ll put a little brass tag underneath that says “in memory of…” my father’s name.

Well, the other day I finally found (and bought) the display case for the flag. This weekend I’m going to fold the flag up the proper way and put it in the display case. I’m sure it is going to be quite emotional for me because it brings back lots of memories. My father fought in three wars defending this country. Anyway, God Bless America!

Guest post of the week by Val Flores

It wasn’t very long ago that I decided I wanted to do something special for my parents for their thirtieth wedding anniversary, so my husband and I started thinking about what to get them. We couldn’t believe our genius when we came up with the idea of taking the four of us on an Alaskan cruise! My parents had always wanted to see that part of the world and it was on my bucket list as well, so it was a great solution. To do the research for the trip at home, I looked into ClearWire pricing and found that wireless internet was actually affordable. I’ve since been researching cruise line reviews and different trip itineraries trying to find one tha! t’s perfect for mom and dad. I know they’ll want to do a couple of day excursions like snow sledding or going into some port towns, so I’m looking those up as well. They’re really going to appreciate this gift when we surprise them with it next week – I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces!

My wife and I have always day dreamed about visiting Spain. To us, Spain has always seemed to be such an exotic country. I can remember as a youth spending a lot of time watching the bull fights on television with my father, and admiring the the skills of the men who were fighting the bulls. It was much later when I grew older that I started to feel sympathy for the poor beasts being killed!

My Aunt Dawn has invited us to come with her on her vacation to Spain this summer. She says she has some genealogy research she wants to pursue over there and wants us to come along to keep her company. She has asked us to look into renting some Puerto Pollensa Apartments for a week while we are there. We were searching on the Internet for lodgings and to be perfectly honest I think I’d enjoy staying in one of the grand Pollensa villas that we found instead.

That is going to be a tough choice to make, between an in-town apartment and a country villa. My wife is lobbying for an in-town apartment because she thinks she would really enjoy being able to just walk out the door and already be in the old town and enjoy the shopping and dining.

I think I’d best be checking with Aunt Dawn and see exactly what it is she has in mind. After all, she is the one footing the bill for our expenses during the trip, and I want to make her happy. In the meantime I need to find out what kinds of activities are available in the area. I understand that there are some beaches and some golf courses in the area.

I’ve never travelled overseas before, I guess I’d better get started on applying for my passport and find out what all I need to do to get ready for an overseas journey!

When Linda was thinking about moving half-way across the country to be near her kids, she was telling us that she wanted to pack up her whole house and move it with her. She is a bit of a pack-rat, though, and she was trying to find some low-priced Moving Companies to haul her belongings. She found a variety of Moving Services that are available. Some will even pack your belongings for you! However those Movers are on the more expensive side.

Looking at all of the Moving Quotes that she got for moving her household, she’s decided that maybe she needs to take things a little bit more slowly and go through the house and make some hard decisions about what to keep and take with her, and what to sell, donate or throw away. Knowing how much “stuff” she has in her house, it will probably be YEARS before she actually moves!

My wife and I were talking about our winter vacation plans, and were looking at some of the different resorts in Myrtle Beach that we could stay in while taking in a few rounds of golf. Naturally we want to stay in a Myrtle Beach hotel that is going to be close to the courses that we want to play, so we can get to the course early in the day.

She’s been telling me that the http://avistaresort.com website is offering a special called “Terrific Tuesday” where we would be able to get a free game in on a Tuesday. Greens fees are not chump change, so that sounds like an interesting package. And I like the sound of the lazy rivers water feature there at the hotel. After a day on the course, I can picture myself floating in an inner-tube down a lazy river! Sounds like a perfect 19th hole to me!
