With so many shows on the TV that are such a turn off to me, I’m grateful for channels like the Discovery Channel, The History Channel and The Animal Planet Channel. It’s Me or The Dog is really a good show, Victoria has helped a tremendous amount of people with their doggie issues and I think that she is in for a long career with The Animal Planet.

Thanks to my friend Mark Hawthorne for the guest post.

Every Wednesday night, I make sure to set my satellite TV’s DVR (Digital Video Recorder) to automatically record this bizarre show. We can also control our florida satellite tv from our home in New Jersey to record it there too! It stars a rather peculiar man named Billy. Billy operates an extermination business with the help of his parents and also his wife Mary. They all stay in a giant mansion, but I do think it’s just a little bit odd that he is still living with his parents after all these years. For they are in remarkably good health, and neither his father nor his mother look a day over 60.

Billy’s mother works as sort of a ‘dispatch’ operator. Whenever their customers call the office, they explain their situation to her. She then calls Billy, and gives him the details of the job. But this is where it starts to turn into more of a comedy act than a reality show, because she can be just a little bit eccentric at times.

One of my favorite episodes to this day, is a wasp extermination job. Billy arrives on the job site with his accomplice Randy, who apparently is severely allergic to wasps. Randy lets Billy do most of the ‘dirty’ work, staying away from the dangerous insects. But right at the end of the episode, the camera cuts to a scene of Randy. He is holding a wasp in his hand, most likely a dead one. But what happens next is guaranteed to blow your mind. He eats it. Never in a million years would I have been able to predict that!

Baseball season is in full swing now and some teams are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Whether or not these teams can maintain the leads they have remains to be seen, and it is not out of the question that lower ranked teams can still put together some winning streaks and climb out of the cellar. In either case, I know that Major League Baseball will be one of the most watched sporting events on my satallite tv this spring and into the summer.

The team I follow is the Milwaukee Brewers and currently the Brewers are in a bit of a slump. The Brewers’ offensive capabilities remain solid as ever with incredible hitters such as Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, and Casey McGehee leading the way for the crew. The pitching is the Brewers’ main weakness and has been for the last few years. The starting rotation more often than not can make it the six or seven innings they need to go, so manager Ken Macha almost always has to dip into the bullpen sooner than he would like. The only problem there is that the bullpen has been prone to give up big innings just like the starting rotation, which doesn’t lead to very good results. In addition, the all time saves leader Trevor Hoffman who is usually a rock solid closer for the crew has already blown more saves this year than he did all of last year. If the pitching doesn’t get better, it may be a long summer for the Brewers.

June 1st is here. Black fly month is officially over, and the mosquitoes are taking over. There is about a two week overlap where both of the pests are intolerable, but for now it is mosquito season. I really dearly love living in the countryside in New England, but I think that I would enjoy it more if there were fewer biting insects!

One thing is for sure, the bats and the dragonflies will not be starving to death anytime soon! There are plenty of mosquitoes to support their families for a long time to come.  And I have plenty of Deep Woods Off to help me survive out there!

My brother-in-law in a total computer geek.  That’s a good thing to be in this day and age!  Every time my wife decides that she has outgrown her computer, she talks with her brother about what she should get, and how much she should expect to pay for it.  Even though he lives more than 800 miles away from us, she calls him every time she has trouble with anything related to software or hardware.

I can remember one day coming home from work and my wife was telling me that she was having some kind of trouble with the computer.  She had been re-booting it a few times, trying to get it to fix itself, but to no avail.  So after supper she called her brother and told him she was stumped, and needed his help.  Fortunately he had some remote desktop software that he sent her that allowed him to look at our computer without even leaving his house.  It was very strange to watch as he took over control of the computer from 800 miles away!

We watched, fascinated, as the cursor moved across the screen, as if an invisible hand was moving the mouse.  Every now and then he called the house and told my wife to reboot the computer and let him sign back on again.  It only took him about an hour to fix the problem, and my wife was thrilled!  She hated the thought of having to break down the computer into its separate components and taking it to the repair shop for them to keep it for a week before even looking at it!
