Hard to believe that Labor Day is coming up and summer will be over. I hope we don’t go directly into winter and that we get a chance to enjoy a nice autumn season this year. Next thing you know the holidays will be upon us, once again, I’m so not ready for all of that. What I am ready for is a round or two of golf at one of the better Myrtle Beach golf courses that I’m hearing so much about.

It seems that Myrtle Beach golf packages are selling like hot cakes this year. Since BP has messed up so many of the other beaches people are flocking to Myrtle Beach for fun in the sun and the ocean. I’ve always enjoyed spending time at Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach is my favorite area of all.

Did you know that you can go to http://www.myrtlebeachgolf.net and book your tee times and your accommodations as well? A one stop shop kind of place, well worth checking out. We still have a little bit of decent weather left in us, at least I sure hope so!

Myrtle Beach has always been a great place to get-a-way to. It was one of our favorites back in the day for the whole family to take our vacation to, something for everybody could be found at Myrtle Beach. I haven’t been able to visit Myrtle Beach in several years and I look forward to seeing the changes that have taken place since I’ve been there last.

I reserved a bit of my tax refund money for a nice summer vacation this year, it has been a long year and a vacation is way over due. I found a great Myrtle Beach hotel online at http://avistaresort.com. The Avista Resort is one of the many oceanfront resorts located in the North Myrtle Beach area and it has been designated as America’s “Number One Family Beach” I like that it is only two walkable blocks away from the famous Main Street that has such a wide variety of things to see and to do.

There are tons of resorts in Myrtle Beach that can be checked out on the Internet, what a great way to find the best one to suite my needs and wants. I look forward to playing a few rounds of golf while I’m there. I come from a family of golfers and we used to always make time to play a game or two during the family vacations back in the 70′s, it’s a good sport for the whole family to enjoy all year round.

I’ll make sure and take plenty of pictures and will post a few here shortly after my return.

Baseball season is in full swing now and some teams are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Whether or not these teams can maintain the leads they have remains to be seen, and it is not out of the question that lower ranked teams can still put together some winning streaks and climb out of the cellar. In either case, I know that Major League Baseball will be one of the most watched sporting events on my satallite tv this spring and into the summer.

The team I follow is the Milwaukee Brewers and currently the Brewers are in a bit of a slump. The Brewers’ offensive capabilities remain solid as ever with incredible hitters such as Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, and Casey McGehee leading the way for the crew. The pitching is the Brewers’ main weakness and has been for the last few years. The starting rotation more often than not can make it the six or seven innings they need to go, so manager Ken Macha almost always has to dip into the bullpen sooner than he would like. The only problem there is that the bullpen has been prone to give up big innings just like the starting rotation, which doesn’t lead to very good results. In addition, the all time saves leader Trevor Hoffman who is usually a rock solid closer for the crew has already blown more saves this year than he did all of last year. If the pitching doesn’t get better, it may be a long summer for the Brewers.

I understand why kids want to learn how to ride a skateboard, I really do. When I was a kid I wanted a skateboard as a gift and my parents insisted that I couldn’t have one (as a gift) so I raided my piggy bank and bought one with my own money. Boy were my parents angry! The told me that I couldn’t ride it in the street or on the sidewalks. Well, we had a nice long paved driveway so it really didn’t bother me much. Back then, though, helmets weren’t even available to buy for someone riding a bike or a skateboard!

I never even saw anyone doing any kinds of tricks on television, so I never had any inspiration or guidance on how to ride one. Obviously, I never developed any real skill, I just enjoyed it. And although my parents were so worried that I’d fall and skin my knee, or crack my head, they preferred that I ride my bike in the street (again with no helmet or padding) than skateboard anywhere. Where’s the sense in that? I think riding a bike is just as risky! Oh well……

Mud season will be here before you know it, and I can’t wait to go to some Mud runs!  With all of the snow we’ve had this winter, we’re sure to have plenty of mud!  I really enjoy watching the competition; to see who gets stuck in the mud and who doesn’t.  I like the smell of the exhaust and the noise of the engines.  The louder the better as far as I’m concerned!

A buddy of mine bought some real good tickets to concerts at the Houston Rodeo which is currently under way. But his mother has become ill and he will not be able to attend. He has been asking around to see if anyone would be interested in purchasing them from him, actually at this point he would be willing to just give them away so as not to see them go to waste. I personally would love to go, but it is too last minute for me to make arrangements. Even though I am self employed and have a bit of flexibility I still have obligations to meet that I need to tend to.

I haven’t been to a rodeo is a long time. There really isn’t a big call for rodeos up here in Maine, so the choices are pretty limited. But I have been to a few, out of state, and they really are a blast. Something that a lot of people are in to and I’m glad that they are still popular. They are usually affordable and you definitely get your monies worth, the events go on for a good long time and there is a lot going on all the time.

The Houston Rodeo is offering entertainment after the rodeo and has plenty of top name performers lined up this year. I looked it up online and they have Gary Allen, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson and many more performing this year. Maybe next year, if I get my ducks in a row I’ll see about attending. It should be a blast.

Last night’s Super Bowl was a great game. The Saints really took the ball and ran with it and they certainly ended up kicking some butts on Super Bowl Sunday. The commercials were funny, as usual, the half time show was entertaining. The Who did a good job, but you can tell that they have been aging right along with the rest of us. Their music was right one, the singing – well it left a lot to be desired but the light show was awesome! I’m glad that The Saints took home the victory and I am all ready looking forward to next year’s football season.

You just gotta love how the Internet makes looking at car reviews so much easier. There are many website dedicated to assist consumers with their search for the perfect vehicle. I have been looking at some nice chevy silverado 1500 pics on Thecarconnection.com website that is filled with all the information anyone could ask for on new and used cars. I have always been a Chevy man and I can tell you that they (Chevrolet) is still cranking out some nice looking vehicles. The chevy Volt specs that I stumbled onto there were very interesting and the picture intriguing, to say the least. Check out this 2007 beauty:

I certainly would like to take advantage of the program that has been extended, the Cash for Clunkers program, before it finally comes to an end. A lot of people have taken advantage of this extension and I don’t want to be left out in the cold on the deal. I’m taking this offer seriously and hopefully my tax refund check will go a long way this year and I can use a good portion of it for a decent down payment.

I’ve even taken a gander at the honda element, now you can really fit a good amount of stuff in the back of this sport-utility. I have to say is an unique alternative to the other conventional sport-utility vehicles, with it’s awkward looking boxy shape, along with it’s dent-absorbing plastic body panels, and rear-hinged “suicide” back doors, it’s truly sporty and stands out from all the others.  Not sure if that is good or bad in this instance. I do like to be unique but not necessarily standing out from the crowd. The older I get the more I feel the need  to blend in most of the times, heck I don’t even want to put any bumper stickers on any of my vehicles any more.

Joe is so excited because his wife gave him two tickets to Manny Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas for March 13th!  His wife doesn’t want to go to the fight, but wants to go to Las Vegas.  I think that is a clever way to get him to take her to Vegas, don’t you?  He’s invited us to join them.  My wife isn’t interested at all in the fight either, but she sure is interested in going to Las Vegas!

While Joe and I go to the fight the wives can go to a show or hang out at one of the casinos.  I’m sure they can find something to do to entertain themselves!

Although I understand that many people like to hunt, I am glad that hunting season is finally over.  I don’t like having to wear blaze orange clothing if I want to go for a walk on my own property out of fear that I might get shot by someone who is half-drunk and hunting on my property without my permission.  I also understand that hunting helps to control the deer population and keep many of the deer from starving to death over the winter, but I have to admit that I find it disturbing how many people enjoy killing other creatures!  And I really don’t see how it can be considered a sport – the prey are at a serious disadvantage and really don’t have much of a “sporting chance!”

Russ and Gail love to Golf Myrtle Beach.  We have been neighbors for about ten years now, and every February they disappear for the entire month to take advantage of one of the many Myrtle Beach Golf Packages that they have found that allows them to play their favorite golf courses.  While they are off enjoying their Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations they have my wife go and water their plants a couple of times each week, and we bring their dog and cat over to our house to pet sit for them.

We don’t mind pet-sitting, their dog is a very affectionate Irish Wolfhound with a great personality, and their cat is, well, their cat is a cat!  But at least the cat doesn’t scratch up the place or spray the walls, and doesn’t keep us awake crying all night long, so that is good!  Russ and Gail send us a postcard from Myrtle Beach, and they always bring back some nice souvenirs, too!

Matt loves to play golf.  Whenever he comes into town to “visit” family, he spends about 98% of his time on the local golf courses.  I think he just says he’s coming up to visit Mom, but he really only joins her for supper, then sleeps at her place, eats breakfast and then hits the golf courses with his best friend Tom.  I think that Mom’s place is simply a free place for him to eat and sleep in between his Tee times.

So it is no suprise to hear that he has been looking at some Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations.  He’s been talking about arranging for a Myrtle Beach Golf Package for him, his wife, Tom, and Tom’s wife to go spend a week at Myrtle Beach.  They’re thinking that the men will take advantage of the several Golf Packages Myrtle Beach while the wives relax on the beach or go shopping together.

My wife’s best friend just returned from a Myrtle Beach Resort vacation.  She brought back lots of photographs and souvenirs for her friends and family.  She was telling us how much fun she had, and about how she and her hubby spent a day at a NASCAR amusement park.  Well, I’m not a big golfer so I had not thought much about going to any of the golfing Myrtle Beach Resorts that the area is famous for, but finding out about the NASCAR park as piqued my interest!

And she told us that they went to a Medieval Times dinner show and had a great time there too.  I’ve always wanted to go to one of those shows; I understand that they serve you a meal that you have to eat without using any silverware!  Hands only!  Well, that certainly brings out the “beast” in me, wondering how it will come about, and watching the show.  So now my wife wants to look into going to Myrtle Beach and staying at one of the Myrtle Beach Hotels that are on the beach and take in the sights.  I’ll let you know if it happens!

According to what I’ve heard from tonight’s news on television Natasha Richardson’s skiing accident has left her in an irreversible life-threatening coma.  They say she bumped her head while skiing on the beginner’s bunny trail, while taking a lesson.  They said she was not wearing a helmet.  That really surprised me that they even mentioned that.  I admit that it has been a few years since I’ve been on the ski slopes, but I’ve never seen any adult wear a helmet while skiing, and darn few kids.  In fact, I’m really not sure I’ve ever seen anyone wear a helmet on the ski slope.  Is this something new?  Are most skiers wearing helmets now?  I can’t imagine wearing a helmet while skiing; I don’t think it would keep my head warm enough!  I’m sure that people’s heads would be better protected, I’m just wondering how their heads could be warm enough too.

Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 Riflescope Multi-X 734124M, 734124BI live in a very rural area of Maine.  A lot of hunting goes on around here.  Most of my buddies hunt.  I don’t have time to hunt lately, but I have gone hunting with them in the past.  A couple of my buddies came over this past weekend to show me their new bushnell scopes that they bought from the opticsplanet.net website.  They brought along a few of their guns along and we spent some time cleaning them and making plans for the next hunting season.  They want to build a tree stand on my property; I told them that I’d have to talk to the wife about that.  I don’t think she’d like that very much; she is not a big fan of people hunting on our property.  She thinks it’s too dangerous.

My friend Bob has asked me to get involved in the local Boys and Girls club and the town community sports teams.  With all of the budget cut-backs in the local schools, sports seem to be taking the back seat to academics.  I can understand the need to put the taxpayer’s money into the academics, but enrichment programs such as music, art, and sports are falling by the wayside.  And that really is too bad, because those are fun things that really add depth to life, and make it worth living!  After all, there is an old adage that goes something like this:  “All work and no play makes Jonny a dull boy.”

So, if these things are going to be reduced or eliminated in the schools, it is up to the private sector to give the kids the opportunities to explore these areas!  So Bob has told me that he wants to hold a fundraiser to buy an inflatable sports cage that he can use with the kids so they can practice their chosen sport of the season.  He showed me the website that sells them, radargunsales.com.

This website sells a lot of cool stuff, from radar guns to portable ice skating rinks, to scoreboards, to inflatable sports cages!

I am rooting for the Cards today.  Largely because they are the “underdogs” and have never won a SuperBowl.  The Steelers have won plenty of them, so I think that it is time for the Cards.  Go Cards!  I plan to watch the Superbowl if the weather will allow it.  I hope I don’t have to be out plowing and sanding!

Managed to sneak in a few hours of ice fishing in Jarod’s ice shack earlier today.  Didn’t catch many fish, but that’s ok.  Had a good time hanging out and having a couple of beers.  There’s nothing like the great feeling of driving your truck out onto the ice to the ice shack!  You always have a little bit of doubt in the back of your head whether the truck will make it or fall through.

I really don’t like poor sportsmanship.  Whenever I’m in a competition, I make it a high priority to be a good sport no matter what.  I have a low tolerance for poor sports.  If I have the opportunity to play some kind of game with a poor sport, or to NOT play with that poor sport, I will pass on the opportunity.  I enjoy friendly competition, and there is nothing friendly about poor sportsmanship!

It was with much surprise that I read today about the poor sportsmanship demonstrated by the girls basketball team of The Covenant School in Dallas Texas in their stunning 100-0win over the Dallas Academy School.  The Covenant School has always had a really good team, they have a large enrollment of girls in their school and have been playing for years.  The Dallas Academy School only has 20 girls TOTAL enrolled in their school, so their talent pool is much smaller, and they have only been playing a short time.  In my opinion The Covenant School exhibited poor sportsmanship in playing so extravagantly hard against the Dallas Academy.  They could have beat them by a much lesser margin.  That kind of beating is simply uncalled for.  Well, that’s my opinion, for what it’s worth!

Well, the weekend is over, spent most of it ice fishing with my friends out on Great Pond.  We didn’t catch very many fish, but we drank a lot of beer!  And we grilled some steak from my buddy’s deer that he shot last fall – boy was it good!  I got several flags, but it didn’t seem like the fish was on the end of it when we got there!  Oh well, back to work tomorrow!
