My sister asked me to take a lot of her “now hiring” posters with me as I travel around town to tack up on all of the public bulletin boards that I come across. I told her “sure, no problem” because I could remember seeing a lot of them everywhere I go. I took about forty of them, and a tin full of push-pins and I put them in a bag to keep in the truck. Amazingly enough, every time I go into a public place now, I look around and don’t see any of those bulletin boards anywhere! What’s up with that? Where are they hiding them all? What has happened to the sense of community that this place used to have?

If local businesses want to support the community, and have the community support it by shopping at their stores, I would think that they would show some support to the community by having bulletin boards like that somewhere in the store. They could have a few simple rules, like everyone needs to put the posting date on what they are hanging up so that the store employees can remove anything more than a month old. In this struggling economy, this is one simple method of co-operation that wouldn’t hurt a soul, and build up some good will. What are your thoughts on this?

I hear that winter weather is moving in on us later today. Everyone is running to the stores to stock up on their batteries, milk, and other basic survival needs.

I’m glad I’m already all stocked up! I hear there is a run on generators, which is not a big surprise; that happens quite frequently. I’m sure glad I already have mine, all set up and ready to go at a moment’s notice!

To live in this area, you need a four wheel-drive vehicle (preferably with studded snow tires) a generator, boots and a good chain saw! I put my snow tires on my truck two weeks ago, to beat the crazy rush of people who wait until snow is actually in the forecast to do it.

I expect we will have a major power outage and treacherous traveling by tomorrow! Next thing you know, my customers will be calling me at all hours begging for help with plowing and sanding their driveways.

I was so excited that my new camera arrived only four days after I ordered it! It sure seems complicated, though; it’s going to take a while to read all of the directions and figure out how to use all of the functions. Apparently it can shoot video too! I didn’t realize that when I ordered it! Cool! Another thing I didn’t realize when I ordered it is that it only stores five pictures on whatever storage “device” or “hard drive” is inside, so I have to go buy a storage chip the next time I go into town so I can take more pictures. I love how I can download the pictures immediately onto my computer! This is the first digital camera I’ve ever had, so this is a big deal for me! I think I’m going to have to buy some storage media to keep all of my pictures on, or I will be filling up this computer in no time at all, and that would be a bad thing; slow it right down to the speed of molasses!

Well, I’m still trying to get that insulated sports bottle down pat. I’ve been putting boiling hot water in it about ten minutes before I’m going to put my hot drink in it. I was trying to put hot chocolate in it, but that just wasn’t working. The directions on the hot chocolate say to use hot, not boiling, water in it. If I do that the hot chocolate in the sports bottle is not kept hot for very long at all! So I’ve switched to hot apple cider or some version of a sugar free flavored drink mix and actually let it boil and then pour the hot water out of the sports bottle and pour the hot drink in.

Then I put the bottle inside one of those foam “can cozy” things for extra insulation. I don’t even try to drink it for about an hour because it really IS too hot then – but it keeps my hands warm! After about an hour it is still pretty hot – a good “drinking temperature.” An hour after that, forget it, it is room temperature. But that’s OK because I like the apple cider and/or fruity drink hot or cold. So I’ve managed to make it “tolerable” but I would not recommend it to my friends to buy one - it just doesn’t work as well as I had hoped.

Guest post by Sheila Powell

Well I was really thrilled when Janet called me and suggested that we go riding together next weekend at the farm. The only thing about riding with Janet is that she is always trying to get me to learn to jump. Jumping scares me a little bit, and I have no desire to compete with Beezie Madden for any gold medals! I just enjoy a nice walk, trot, or canter. More excitement than that I don’t need! Janet has always been a thrill junkie, and she just can’t even imagine being content to NOT jump. I’m more than happy to provide her with an appreciative audience.

We haven’t had the chance to ride together at all this year, what with all of the health issues that Janet and her family have been going through. Janet told me that she needs to pick up a new pair of durable riding boots this week before we go riding though; the surgery on her foot has made it too hard to get her old boots on. I don’t think that it was the surgery itself; I think that it is because she has been so inactive that she put on a little bit of weight and it has mostly gone to her calves, making her old boots too tight to pull on, even with the boot hooks.

I told her that I’d like to join her at the tack shop to drop off my ariat boot bag for repair. The zipper is broken and I’m tired of fussing with it. Hopefully they can get it fixed for me.

I bought a new digital camera over the Internet today. I’ve had my reservations about buying one over the Internet, afraid that it would be a poor quality. But this particular camera I had been able to see in the store, up close and personal and felt it was a good camera. I would have bought it at the store, but they were sold out and couldn’t tell me when it was coming in again. I waited three weeks for it to come in, and it didn’t so I finally ordered it online. I could have had it shipped to the store for free, but it would have taken three weeks to get it, and having shipped to my house was only $6 and I am supposed to get it within three days. I figured that it was worth the $6 to get it that much earlier. It’s a 10mp 3xzoom and only cost $109! A bargain! I’m really looking forward to getting it and starting to use it!

Written by my friend Lino Brown

The securitychoice installers came over today to install a new home security system in our home. I was surprised how quickly everything got done. I took the afternoon off of work so that I could let them in, but they were literally done within the hour. Because I already had the afternoon off, I decided to just stay at home and take the day for myself. I went to the grocery store early for the week and started to cook a great dinner. I got to watch some talk shows that I never get to see because I am a work and loved every minute of it. I also got all of my laundry done and bills paid. It is amazing what you can get accomplished when you leave work early. My kids were shocked that we didn’t have to run to the store and that great dinner was already made when I picked them up from school. I think that I may consider working part-time! I really got so much done in those short four hours that I lose at work everyday!

A few weeks ago I was informed by several people that the plastic sports bottle that I always drink out of is bad for my health. The well meaning people were very insistent that it leached dangerous chemicals into my drink and that I could die from cancer from it down the road. They told me that I could buy insulated stainless steel sports bottles over the Internet, so I went online and found a company that sells insulated stainless steel sports bottles. I ordered a couple of them, thinking I’d give a few out as gifts as Christmas gifts. That was really the only way I could justify the exorbitant shipping fee! It cost me almost as much money to ship one as it did to ship three!

Anyway, they arrived in the mail on Saturday and I gave one a try today. It was a cold day so I decided to pour some hot chocolate in it this morning before I left for work. There was a big warning sticker on the box that the bottle came in, warning that the hot liquid would stay “just as hot” for several hours. Well an hour later my “hot chocolate” was only room temperature chocolate milk. I guess I’ll try it again tomorrow with pre-warming the bottle with hot water before pouring the hot chocolate in it, and I’ll make sure the hot chocolate is a lot hotter going into the bottle. I’d hate to think that I’d wasted my money on a bottle that won’t keep my hot chocolate hot for at least an hour!

The local Harley shop was having a big open house celebration this past weekend, so I decided to go to the event and check it out. There was a live broadcast being done by a local radio station, lots of free food and sodas, and they were having discounts on just about everything in the store. I ended up buying a new detachable windshield for my Harley. I was impressed with how easily it can be installed and removed. I installed it right there at the shop – they let me borrow the tools to do it. It was funny because all I needed was an allen wrench! Anyway, when I drove home I noticed that with the new windshield on the bike, I wasn’t feeling the wind hitting me, so I was driving faster than I thought! It will take a while to adjust to that!

Today I decided to go out to the local lawn mower dealership and buy a new lawnmower. I bought one of those new types that you sit on and drive like a bulldozer. If you really want to get fancy and not get off of the mower to dump it you can get one where you just sit there and push a button on the side and the gate opens and the body picks up and dumps your lawn clippings. It also comes diesel powered which is what I bought with a posi-track hydrostatic transmission and halogen headlights in case I have to mow sometime at night, which is often the case. I just got it home and made four passes across the front of my lawn. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, it’s a 52″ cut. I really wanted a 72″ cut but I couldn’t justify it. This one will have to do for now.
