When I was in the public school system the students were given a choice of two different foreign languages to study as a prerequisite to attending college. One was French and the other was Spanish. Once in college students were given the opportunity to study other languages. The college I went to did not have a wide variety of foreign languages to study. If I recall correctly the other courses offered were German and Russian.

I think it’s wonderful that college students are now given the option to take many different languages as a course of study. I’ve always had an interest in the history and culture of China and it would be like a dream come true if I had the opportunity to work as a translator in China at one of the translation company/companies in China.

With the economic and political growth of China, I expect that there will be an increased demand for translation services in China as more foreign countries decide to expand their businesses in China.

When you don’t need a lawyer, it seems that one could be found relatively easily. After all, the biggest section in the local yellow pages is for attorneys, and the big firms advertise on daytime TV. But the critical part of finding an attorney is finding one who you can trust with your personal information and who you can trust to give their best effort in producing the desired outcome on your behalf.

Therein lies the rub. There are a lot of attorneys out there, but a whole lot of them are not trustworthy, are lazy, and are just plain ineffective if not incompetent. When you retain an attorney, document everything and get everything in writing, such as fees discussed, any discounts or exceptions that you agree on, and a clear definition of the assigned task with your expected outcome.

This next month is when my annual car insurance policy comes up for renewal. Although I do like the company that I have for my auto insurance, I remember well how my dad used to tell me it is always a good idea to check around with other companies before you just automatically renew your policy. There can be a huge swing in rates between different companies, the trick is to get a good rate on the most coverage that you need. The only way to be sure of that is to get a lot of different quotes from a lot of different companies.

This yearly task is so much easier now that you can compare car insurance quotes over the internet. You just find a good site and type in all your car’s information, then the service comes back with a list of quotes from the various insurance companies who want your business.

I hope to pass along the same good advice to my own son when he gets his first car and has to learn about auto insurance and maintenance. He will be working this summer to save up his money for his first car. I told him that I would match whatever amount he earns and saves between now and September 1. So that is our target date for him getting a new car.

I heard that my niece just got her eyes checked and that she needs new glasses. She didn’t like any of the reasonably priced frames at the eye doctor’s (of course) and her mother can’t afford to pay the high prices of all of the trendy fashion frames. I suggested that she consider another option – to buy glasses online at zennioptical.com.

One of the things that annoys me about the Internet is how many pop-up ads that appear on my screens about how President Obama is trying to encourage everyone to get more Education. And there is a strong encouragement for the unemployed to get more education. The theory behind this encouragement is sound, to a point. In general, having a good education can make you more attractive to prospective employers. But people have to understand that just because you have a college degree does not guarantee you a good paying job!

And according to a recent article in The Chronicle, tuition costs are rising, making it more difficult for the needy to go to college. Yes, scholarships and grants are available (to a point) but many of these people need a means to support themselves and their families at the same time that they are going to school. Sometimes, going part time to an online school like Walden University helps, but working and going to school while tending to a family is a very difficult thing to do. Who really wants to devote their entire lives to work and studies and not be able to enjoy watching the children grow up, missing their recitals, and basically ignoring the emotional needs of their family? There really needs to be a better plan to help support the family while the parent(s) are going to school.

A lady that used to work with me has just announced her retirement. I’m still a long way from being able to do that, but I am glad that she is able to stop working and enjoy the rest of her life without being chained to a desk or an office.

She worked for a German-owned company, and had to make all her retirement investments on her own. Evidently, the Germans don’t offer any kind of retirement plans – they expect each person to take care of that on their own.

She did all of her planning by working with an Online Broker and setting up her investment portfolio. She decided on what types of stocks she was comfortable with, which companies that she wanted to invest in, and what her price points for trades would be. Then she set about doing Online Trading until she reached her financial goals.

I haven’t even given any thought to IRA Accounts and how much money I need to invest. But now I realize how important that is and her retirement has given me the incentive to get my own started this year. I’m not going to work for other people forever.
