I have a few friends who have grown children on the local police force. Yesterday during our regular coffee break at the Market, they were telling me that their kids were told the day before that their jobs have been eliminated effectively immediately. They were very upset because good jobs are really hard to come by around here. I’m glad that I’m self-employed and that my services are pretty important around here. People need to have the snow plowed and their driveways and parking lots sanded. Summer is a little slow for me sometimes, but I usually make enough money during the winter to be able to ride out the slower summer months.
I am concerned that the police force cutting back is going to compromise the safety of all of us, however. This area is starting to see more “big city” crime, and we need the police force to deal with it! I think that there could be budget cuts in other ways than eliminating the jobs of police officers!
